A performance management system is the process in which an organization will involves its employees, as individuals and members of a group, in improving organizational effectiveness in the accomplishment of the organization’s mission and goals. Employee performance management includes: planning work and setting expectations, continually monitoring performance, developing the capacity to perform, periodically rating performance in a summary fashion, and rewarding good performance. Planning Work and other processes are planned out in organizations; one of the best ways the organization knows to ensure that the employees are effective in the organization is by implementing the employees in the planning process. This helps the employees understand the goals, what needs done, why it needs to be done, and how well it should be done within the organization. Monitoring Within effective organizations, projects and other assignments are monitored, positive monitoring is consistently measuring performance as well as providing positive and negative feedback to and from employee’s on their progress toward reaching goals. Requirements for monitoring employees performance is compared against their elements and standards in the organization, monitoring provides the organization opportunity to check the employees performance and the ability to measure the unacceptable performance. Developing Employee development should be evaluated and addressed; this form of developing can increase the capacity to perform through training, give tasks that work on new skills of higher levels of responsibility, improve the work process, and many other methods. When employees are provided with training and developmental opportunity’s, organizations encourage good performance, strengthen job-related skills and competence, and helps employees keep up with changes in the organization such as; new policy, standards, or technology. Rating Organizations will summarize employees performance allowing them to compare  performance over time or amongst a variety of employees, this allows the organization to see who the best performers are as well as the employees that need work. Rating is evaluating employees or a group of employee’s performance against the standards in a performance plan and assigning a summary rating record. There are rating of records assigned according to procedures included in the organizations appraisal program, which is biased on the performance by employees during an entire appraisal period. Rewarding Rewarding is when the organization recognizes the employees, either as individuals or a team for their performance and acknowledging their contributions to the needs of the organization. Positive performance can be recognized without waiting for nominations for awards, recognition can be implemented in all day-to-day operations within the organization. Using a Performance Management System Any organization that uses a performance management system creates positive work practices among the employees, as well it allows the management in the organization to see where the employees performance is at. Organizations need to gather information about employee performance in order to figure out who would be a good fit when it comes to promotions and who would be better equipped to handle more responsibilities. Performance management system helps the organization to determine which employees are best suited to hire from within, not only do they already know the operations of the organization, but the organizations management knows their work ethics and has already been monitoring their progress.

Reading Comprehension and Mathematical Problem Solving Skills Essay

ABSTRACT This study determined the relation between reading comprehension skills and mathematical problem-solving skills of fourth year high school students of Tagaytay City Science National High School. Specifically, the study aimed to: describe the profile of the students in terms of age, gender, birth order, parents’ educational attainment, parents’ occupation, and monthly family income; determine the level of reading comprehension skills of the students; determine the level of mathematical problem-solving skills of the students; determine the significant differences in the students’ reading comprehension skills when grouped according to age, gender, birth order, parents’ educational attainment, parents’ occupation, and monthly family income; determine the significant differences in the students’ mathematical problem-solving skills when grouped according to age, gender, birth order, parents’ educational attainment, parents’ occupation , and monthly family income; and determine the significant relationship between students’ reading comprehension skills and mathematical problem-solving skills. The descriptive-correlational research design was used in this study. The respondents of the study were the 222 fourth year high school students under the general curriculum. In order to collect data and provide answers to the research hypotheses, Students’ Questionnaire, researcher-made test on mathematical problem solving, and Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test were used by the researcher in gathering data. For data analysis, the following statistical tools were used: frequency, percentage, mean, t-test, analysis of variance and Pearson Product-Moment Coefficient of Correlation. The significance of the differences and relationship were tested at 0.05 level. Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: The fourth year high school students of Tagaytay City Science National High School are mostly of average age, their ages range from 15 – 16 years old. There are  more female students than male students. A big percentage of the respondents are middle born. Majority of the respondents’ parents finish high school. Majority of the respondents’ fathers and mothers are unskilled workers. Most of the respondents’ family are low income earners, the monthly family income range from P 10,000 – P 19,999. The level of reading comprehension skill of the students is â€Å"good.† The level of mathematical problem-solving skill of the students is â€Å"fair.† There are no significant differences in the students’ reading comprehension skills when grouped according to age, gender, birth order, parents’ educational attainment, and monthly family income. However, there is a significant difference between reading comprehension skills and fathers’ occupation but there is no significant difference between reading comprehension skills and mothers’ occupation. There are no significant differences in the students’ mathematical problem-solving skills when grouped according to age, gender, birth order, parents’ educational attainment, parents’ occupation, and monthly family income. Finally, there is a significant relationship between students’ reading comprehension skills and mathematical problem-solving skills. The following are hereby recommended by the researcher: Students should observe proper study habits . They should develop a study schedule to help them maximize their time for studying that could lead to improvement of their reading comprehension and mathematical problem solving skills. There is a need to assist students develop favorable attitude toward reading different reading materials that suit their interest and age. Students should constantly practice solving mathematical problems, for them to master and to improve their skill. English teachers should motivate students to engage in recreational reading to facilitate language learning. They should help them develop the attitude of learning while enjoying. They should give quarterly reading reports using books, magazines, newspapers, and other reading materials that test their level of comprehension along literal, interpretative, and critical areas. These reports can be used to evaluate the progress of reading comprehension of the students. Likewise, mathematics teachers should provide students with proper motivation related to problem solving and create a positive learning environment to improve their performance. Further, mathematics teachers should introduce varied techniques and strategies in solving word problems. During classroom  instruction, they should check the steps adapted by the students in solving mathematical problems to correct their mistakes in that instance and to enhance their performance in mathematics. Parents must see to it that their children observe proper study habits and if possible guide them in their homeworks and other class activities . They must advise and encourage their children to read different reading materials. In addition, parents must understand that their children need to be guided most especially in their weaknesses in problem solving. The administrators should continuously train teachers in reading strategies to update them on the latest trends and issues so that they can use these in teaching students on how to read effectively and meaningfully. Similarly, the administrators should provide seminars and trainings about mathematical problem solving techniques to equip their teachers with new methods in problem solving, which they can later impart to their students in solving problems systematically and analytically. Moreover, school administrators should be supportive of their teachers to help them grow professionally. They should encourage teachers to pursue graduate studies in English and mathematics. Finally, school administrators should exert efforts to conceptualize programs and activities on how reading can be involved in mathematics instruction. Curriculum makers should develop learning materials that will enhance the reading comprehension and mathematical problem solving skills of the students. They should also focus on improving the curriculum of English and mathematics. Lastly, future researchers may conduct studies of this nature to validate the results of the present study and to include other variables which were not investigated in this study such as attitude toward mathematics and English, study habits, and some teacher related factors. This study will consider the various definitions associated with the topic and pay specific attention to the spectrum of teaching styles proposed by Mosston Ashworth (1986). The study will then specifically focus on use of the productive and reproductive styles by analysing my own experience against findings from literature. The framework for teaching styles and behaviours came from work by Mosston (1966). The ideas that Mosston proposed have changed and adapted since the first publication of the framework. The interaction between teacher and student has been developed since his initial publication (Mosston Ashworth, 1986) and have provided a framework where the decisions are the main element and the relationship between the teacher and the learner has in making those decisions. So influential was it that the work by Nixon Locke (1973) described it as the most significant advance in the theory of physical education pedagogy in recent history. The results showed that although their was evidence that learning occurred using all three styles the pupils in the guided discovery and command style recorded significantly better cognitive learning compared to no instruction. For skill attempts however learners in the no instruction style made significantly more attempts at the task than learners in the other styles. The researchers went onto recommend that a longer practice time than 20 minutes may have resulted in the guided discovery having more skill learning, cognitive learning and skill attempts as this style requires longer practice time fo r the full benefits to be witnessed. From my own experience this is something which I have also observed as pupils respond better when they have longer periods of time to experiment different skill movements. My experience has also taught me that to increase the practice time requires effective instruction delivery which has also been identified by Cleland Pearse (1995). Conclusion: In conclusion several research questions have been answered about the reproductive styles of teaching; what the effects of the reproductive styles have on learning, how learners of different ability level are influenced by different styles, what effect pairings have on pupils ability to give effective feedback, what factors influence learners decision making and what effect the different styles have on learners ability to learn new knowledge. The findings from the productive style are; can learners employ critical thinking, what is the effect of productive styles on learners ability to produce divergent movement and how can teachers promote critical thinking. The amount of research that is available for the productive styles of teaching in limited when compared to the breadth of research studies on the reproductive teaching styles. However, a study by Cothran et al. (2000) has identify that teachers reported using a variety of style in their lessons yet only one productive style was in the top five styles used. Although it is encouraging that teachers report using a variety these results must be interpreted as it suggests that teachers over estimate the variety of teaching styles used thus affecting the amount of research there is available in relation to the productive styles of teaching. Research conducted by Goldberger (1992) has identified that the reason that may remain unconvinced or unsure of the styles use is because of the lack of confirmatory research on those styles. Therefore further research is needed into the productive styles of teaching to provide teachers with a knowledge base on how these styles can be effective at promoting learning. Recommendations: These findings have provided an initial insight into the use of teaching styles across a theoretically linked spectrum. One noticeable exception was that there is conflict within the research findings and not all researchers reported the same findings which identifies that there are a significant amount of variables related to spectrum research and that the variable that is being focused on should be properly investigated by using the correct research method.
